Sleep and overnight recovery

Sleep problems: when the brain and body do not settle

Difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, or unrefreshing sleep can have many causes. Neurofeedback and biofeedback address activation and regulation after those causes have been considered.

  • Sleep Problems

Sleep problems take different forms

Some people remain awake for a long time, while others wake repeatedly or much too early. Even sleep of sufficient length can feel unrefreshing. Daytime tiredness, irritability, and poor concentration are common consequences.

Stress and rumination can disrupt sleep. Physical illness, pain, breathing problems, medication, shift work, or irregular routines may also contribute.

Understanding the sleep pattern first

Before training, we review sleep times, waking periods, daily rhythm, current strain, and known diagnoses. Signs of a breathing-related or other sleep disorder require medical assessment.

A sleep diary can help assess change beyond a single night. Goals are set so that they can be reviewed in everyday life.

Training activation and settling

Biofeedback may show whether breathing, muscle tension, or heart rate variability still indicates high activation in the evening. Neurofeedback can provide feedback on selected EEG activity. The choice depends on the starting point.

  • Recognise physical activation in the evening
  • Practise settling responses with real-time feedback
  • Record sleep and daytime functioning
  • Combine training with useful sleep routines

Treatment matched to the cause

Neurofeedback and biofeedback may complement care for some sleep problems. They do not replace treatment of an underlying medical or mental health condition. Evidence varies by sleep problem and protocol.

Mechanism and training goal

Sleep Problems

Possible cause

Current research suggests that sleep problems are often linked to neural overactivation ("cortical hyperarousal"), which impairs normal information processing and the ability to settle down.

How neurofeedback can help

Neurofeedback trains the nervous system to settle more easily, with the aim of supporting both falling asleep and staying asleep. Response varies by sleep problem and protocol.
