Why I-NFBF

What makes I-NFBF training different

The I-NFBF – Institute for Neurofeedback and Biofeedback – brings together all training pathways in bio-/neurofeedback under one roof and teaches the largest system portfolio in Switzerland. Since 2004, more than 500 people have attended our courses, and over 270 of them have completed the full diploma training.

Recognition and Background

The diploma training is recognised under ASCA and EMR guidelines and by BBNS. This recognition is not something to be taken for granted: institute founder Dr. oec. Eva Otzen played a decisive role in establishing biofeedback – and, as part of it, neurofeedback – as a recognized standalone method with Swiss complementary health insurers. This recognition allows graduates to register with the relevant professional associations, making their services eligible for reimbursement by complementary health insurance providers.

Our principle: only those who practise can teach

At I-NFBF, all instructors actively practice bio- and neurofeedback themselves. This is the first requirement for working with us. This means you learn from people who understand the method through their own clinical practice, combined with many years of teaching experience.

The Largest System Portfolio in Switzerland

I-NFBF offers the widest range of bio-/neurofeedback systems available in Switzerland. You choose the system you want to train on.

Interdisciplinary Depth

The training integrates content from:

  • Medicine and applied neuroscience
  • Psychophysiology and electrical engineering
  • Biomedicine, stress and sleep medicine
  • Neurology and cardiology, psychiatry and psychology

What Makes Training at I-NFBF Different

The training to become a certified bio-/neurofeedback therapist at I-NFBF is not a conventional training programme. Our goal is not for instructors or supervisors to tell you what to know or how to act.

Training at I-NFBF is an experiential space in which you work directly with bio- and neurofeedback. Over several months, you and your fellow participants discover together what happens when you begin to see yourself differently, and when you genuinely apply the methods you learn – first to yourself, and then to your patients.

Real change does not begin with acquiring more knowledge, but with a genuine shift in familiar neural patterns – both in your patients and in yourself. This kind of experience cannot be taught like a textbook chapter. It emerges through shared exploration, reflection on what is experienced, and careful application to your own nervous system before applying it to your patients.

This is why I-NFBF places special emphasis on a training path that leaves room for your own discoveries. You are guided, not instructed.

Can supplementary insurance reimburse treatment?

I-NFBF Diploma graduates are recognised by ASCA, EMR and BBNS. Their treatments may be reimbursed depending on the client’s supplementary insurance policy.

Who can enrol?

This training program is aimed at professionals from therapy, healthcare, social sciences, sports and neuroscience, medicine, education, and psychology who wish to expand their treatment spectrum to include neuro- and biofeedback, as well as at newcomers with strong professional motivation in this field. For official recognition, additional foundational knowledge in anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology, as well as in social and psychological fundamentals, is required. If you do not yet have this background, you can acquire it through our foundational medical training program.

Psychologists

We review whether additional medical foundations are required for the intended registration pathway.

Physicians

Previous medical education may cover the medical-foundation requirement; the register makes the final assessment.

Neuroscientists

Add practical and supervised clinical application to an academic understanding of the brain.

Therapists and educators

We review your professional background and the additional training required for your intended scope of practice.

  • 43 course days over one year, of which 37 in person and 6 online
  • Supervised hands-on practice on the devices
  • Case supervision in small groups
  • Diploma thesis on three case studies

Recognition: what it involves

Admission to a register follows an individual application. ASCA and EMR also require documented medical foundations, which the Medical Base Course contributes towards. Whether a supplementary insurer reimburses treatment, and to what extent, is the insurer’s decision.

Reimbursement for a specific treatment depends on each client’s supplementary insurance policy.

Recognition and professional bodies

Quality recognised beyond the diploma

I-NFBF Diploma graduates are recognised by ASCA, EMR and BBNS. Dr Eva Otzen-Wehmeyer has been an ISNR member for many years.
