Attention and ADHD in children and adults

Poor concentration, distractibility, and restlessness can affect school, work, and family life. Neurofeedback trains selected activity patterns, while biofeedback can add work on physical regulation.

How attention difficulties may appear

Some people find it difficult to start tasks, lose track quickly, or switch frequently between activities. Others can focus for a long time on an interesting subject but struggle to direct attention when a task is less engaging.

ADHD may also involve impulsivity, motor restlessness, strong emotional responses, and difficulties with organisation or time awareness. Presentation differs across children, adolescents, and adults.

Diagnosis and starting point

An ADHD diagnosis is not made from an EEG alone. Before training, we consider existing assessments, daily routines, sleep, medication, and the specific situations in which difficulties occur.

Together we define observable goals, such as staying with a task for longer, returning after distraction, or noticing physical restlessness earlier.

What training may involve

During neurofeedback, the person receives immediate feedback on selected EEG activity. The task is not to force a value consciously. Repeated feedback is intended to help the brain recognise and maintain the target states more consistently.

  • Practise attention in short sessions
  • Plan breaks and demands for the person’s age
  • Connect goals with home, school, or work
  • Review change outside the sessions regularly

One part of care

Neurofeedback may form part of a broader ADHD treatment plan. It does not replace necessary medical or psychological care, and medication should never be changed without the prescribing clinician.

This pattern is frequently seen in ADHD – a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs the ability for self-regulation and impulse control and manifests in characteristic brainwave patterns.

How neurofeedback can help

The goal of neurofeedback is to shift irregular brainwave patterns into more stable, organised patterns. This allows the brain to work more efficiently and in a more balanced way. It is used as a non-pharmacological complement to an existing ADHD treatment plan.
