Neurodivergence and self-regulation

Autism spectrum and individual sensory processing

Autistic people experience sensory input, social situations, and physical signals in different ways. Training is not intended to remove autism, but to address specific difficulties and abilities chosen with the person.

  • Autism Spectrum

A wide range of experiences

Sensory overload, transitions, sleep problems, high tension, or managing attention may affect daily life. Other characteristics are not experienced as problems and do not need treatment.

Goals are agreed with the autistic person and, where appropriate, with parents or support people. Communication, sensory needs, and breaks are taken into account when appointments are planned.

Starting point and current support

Autism is not diagnosed from an EEG. Before training, we review existing assessments, current support, medication, sleep, and the specific situations the person wants to change.

Neurofeedback and biofeedback should not displace appropriate educational, psychological, medical, or speech and language support.

Training adapted to sensory needs

Neurofeedback provides simple feedback on selected EEG activity. Biofeedback can display breathing, heart rate, or muscle tension. Stimuli, screen presentation, and session length are adjusted where possible.

  • Ensure consent and a clearly explained process
  • Observe sensory load during the session
  • Choose goals linked to specific situations
  • Announce breaks and changes in advance

Individual response and varied evidence

Some people use training to work on self-regulation, attention, or responses to overactivation. Usefulness must be assessed individually. Evidence varies by goal and protocol.

Mechanism and training goal

Autism Spectrum

Possible cause

These challenges may be related to distinctive neural stimulus processing and a particularly sensitive nervous system.

How neurofeedback can help

Individualized neurofeedback training can contribute to emotional regulation, focus, and sensory balance – gently, non-invasively, and without medication.
